Should you jumpstart a newer model vehicle?
We had a really interesting question from a TikTok follower who asked Steve, does jump starting these modern cars cause electrical issues down the track?
Steve answered with the following:
First and foremost, if you have no idea what you are doing when it comes to jump starting a modern day car, just dont touch it. There are few things that you really need to be careful of.
Spike is one of them. Reverse polarity. It can also damage the vehicle that is starting the dead vehicle.
It does need to be done correctly.
If you have a charger, I would highly recommend using that. However, do bear in mind that different batteries need different chargers. If you have an AGM battery, you cannot put a normal battery charger on it. It will actually boil it. So you will need to get a specific battery charger for an AGM battery.
And a lot of cars are now coming out with AGM batteries as standard. There is a lot of variables and you really need to look at each vehicle specifically to see which way it needs to be done.
My advice is to ask your mechanic with your vehicle which way is the best way to go.
So, what is counted as a modern vehicle. Steve advised anything from 2018 onwards as a general rule but of course check with your mechanic to be sure.
